Daryl's Lessons from the Lab: The Herbst™ and Distal Jet

This lesson is on two popular appliances: The Herbst™ and Distal Jet appliances. Herbst™ appliances are active appliances designed to permanently lengthen the mandible by holding it in an open and protruded (forward) position. This stimulates growth at its posterior end back into the direction of the joint.

The Distal Jet is an appliance used to distalize maxillary molars to gain space for crowded and erupting teeth and to correct a Class II molar relationship. The Distal Jet uses compressed super-elastic coil springs to apply a constant distalizing force to the molars. Click here to get the lesson on both of these appliances.
